Annual Cycles in the Interstellar Scintillation Timescales of PKS B 1519 – 273 and PKS B 1622 – 253 Steven

چکیده
We have used the University of Tasmania’s 30-m radio telescope at Ceduna in South Australia to regularly monitor the flux density of a number of southern blazars. We report the detection of an annual cycle in the variability timescale of the centimetre radio emission of PKSB1622–253. Observations of PKSB1519–273 over a period of nearly two years confirm the presence of an annual cycle in the variability timescale in that source. These observations prove that interstellar scintillation is the principal cause of inter-day variability at radio wavelengths in these sources. The best-fit annual cycle model for both sources implies a high degree of anisotropy in the scattering screen and that it has a large velocity offset with respect to the Local Standard of Rest. This is consistent with a greater screen distance for these “slow” IDV sources than for rapid scintillators such as PKSB0405-385 or J1819+3845.

In this Letter, we discuss new deep radio observations of PKS 1622-253 and their implications for the energetics of the central engine that powers this strong high energy gamma-ray source. Combining archival infrared and optical measurements with new millimeter observations, we show that even though the accretion flow in PKS 1622-253 is under-luminous by quasar standards, a powerful super-lumin...

متن کاملObservations of Intrahour Variable Quasars: Scattering in our Galactic Neighbourhood
Interstellar scintillation (ISS) has been established as the cause of the random variations seen at centimetre wavelengths in many compact radio sources on timescales of a day or less. Observations of ISS can be used to probe structure both in the ionized insterstellar medium of the Galaxy, and in the extragalactic sources themselves, down to μas scales. A few quasars have been found to show la...

The remarkable rapid variations in radio flux density and polarization of the quasar PKS 0405-385 observed in 1996 are subject to a correlation analysis, from which characteristic time scales and amplitudes are derived. The variations are interpreted as interstellar scintillations. The cm wavelength observations are in the weak scintillation regime for which models for the various autoand cross...
متن کاملDoes the Blazar Gamma-ray Spectrum Harden with Increasing Flux? - Analysis of Nine Years of Egret Data
The Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) discovered gamma-ray emission from more than 67 blazars during its nine-year lifetime. We conducted an exhaustive search of the EGRET archives and selected all the blazars that were observed multiple times and were bright enough to enable a spectral analysis using standard power-law models. The samp...
